Do I need special equipment to find a gift star?

What Do I Need to Name a Star?

If you purchase a name a star gift and it inspires the astronomer within, your gift recipient won't need a fancy telescope to search the skies. If you go with a company like Name a Star Live, you can purchase a star gift package that come with a complimentary viewing of the star using an online telescope, SLOOH. Name a Star Live is actually part of a larger commercial space flight entity (the same folks responsible for the first privately funded space launch way back in 1982), so they certainly know their way around the sky.

If inspired by SLOOH, naked eye astronomy is often the best initial step into this new world of stargazing. Many find it very helpful to know the basic constellations such as Orion, Gemini, the Big Dipper and others before trying to hunt for the gift star or any other celestial body using binoculars or a telescope.

Once a new stargazer is able to find the Big Dipper and the North Star, those "landmarks" in the sky can be used as navigation aids to find others with greater ease. What you are looking for might be best found by consulting at a constellation map and seeing where it is in relation to the North Star. Is it in a southerly direction and to the right? Higher north and to the left?
